The Kommenda Wars break out within the Eguafo Kingdom
The conflict disrupted trade and pitted the Dutch West India Company and its Eguafo allies against Royal African Company-backed factions over the right to trade and maintain forts at Kommenda and succession to the Eguafo throne. The war also involved inland Akan Denkyira and Twifo traders seeking coastal access to European trading partners. The six-year conflict severely disrupted trade, significantly depopulated the area, and created widespread kidnapping of rival groups, who were then sold to the Europeans for slaves. That led to increased Dutch and English exports of slaves, and established English commercial dominance at Kommenda.
