How would you like to leap across space and time to explore the ruins of Fort Amsterdam in Abandze, Ghana, and discover firsthand the history of this important site?
THIS digital portal is the culmination of many years of historical research, archaeology, architectural and engineering analysis, and digital capture-from-reality and historicized model building. Relatively few people can actually travel to Ghana themselves and visit in person, so we made this tour to take you there from anywhere in the world. Using a Unity videogame engine, we have recreated the fort and village to let you virtually visit the site and learn about its past and present. The world you will see has been painstakingly recorded using drones, laser scanning, photogrammetry, and good old fashioned field drawings. Information in kiosks within the tour comes from extensive new archival research on Kormantin’s history – much of which can be found elsewhere in this website.
The experience strives to be new form of digital heritage interpretation – a videogame-based simulation of an AR-enhanced self-guided tour of a physical historical site. If you visit all the kiosks, you can unlock new features and areas to explore. Give it a try, and let us know what you think!
